10 Ways to Create a Daily Reading Routine

It's no secret; I love reading.

But sometimes it feels impossible to find time to do it!

Squeezing a page or two between work and dinner is often the most I can fit in. Sometimes the task of actually finishing a book can feel like an endless struggle.

As well as being a pleasure, reading improves your vocabulary, imagination, communication skills and encourages empathy, so of course, it is important.

Whether you're a bookaholic or have rarely ever finished a page, take a look at these 10 Ways to Add Reading to Your Daily Routine.

1. ADD IT TO YOUR DIARY


Adding reading to your diary is the first and most crucial step.

Like eating, sleeping and showering; reading needs to become a regular part of your life. Until it does, treat it like another daily task by writing it down and ticking it off.

Did you know you are 42% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down?

No one likes a leftover 'to-do' at the end of the day. Add reading to your daily tasks to remind you of its importance.

2. FIRST OR LAST


A great way to incorporate reading into your schedule is to do it first thing in the morning, or last thing before bed. A regular reading time will encourage your reading to become habitual.

If you are someone who likes a little inspiration to get you through the day, try reading in the morning before or during breakfast. If you're someone who likes to relax and switch off before sleep, try reading before bed, (The Sleep Council say “39% of people who are in the habit of reading before they go to sleep, sleep very well”).

3. WHILE EXERCISING


If you enjoy a Hiit workout or mountain bike ride, then reading while simultaneously exercising is probably not possible...

However, if you use a treadmill, cross-trainer or stationary bike reading is a great way to take your mind off your exercise while killing two birds with one stone.

Switch your usual workout tune or tv show for a chapter of your favourite book. It's a great way to stay energised!

4. ON THE GO


Reading while you commute is a great way to cram in the pages. The bus, tube, train or tram are familiar places people read as they travel. Don't be afraid to switch from your phone to your chapter.

5. SWAP OUT SOCIAL MEDIA


Social media is quickly taking over the world! Don't let it take over your life.

Did you know that in the 1970s, 60% of US teens read books out of choice compared to just 16% in 2016.

Apps like Instagram and Facebook can be great ways to connect with friends, check up on your favourite celebs and brands and stay on top of trends. However, we're all guilty of endlessly scrolling; wasting hours that we could spend wisely elsewhere.

Switching out half an hour of social media for a good chapter of your book can encourage more reading in your daily routine while reducing your screentime.

6. TRY AN E-BOOK


If you are a bit digitally obsessed, then don't panic. There are ways to incorporate reading into your daily routine without reducing your hours on a screen.

Many books are available electronically. You can download E-Books to your Kindle, laptop, phone, or other digital platforms.

E-books are great if you plan to read at work or on your commute, as you don't need to carry a physical book with you. You can also store numerous books simultaneously, reducing the need for physical storage space.

7. WHILE YOU WAIT


Does anyone else have a friend who is always running late?! (Don't tell her I mentioned it).

If you're often left waiting in a cafe, or on a bench, idly twisting your fingers and trying to look busy, then make sure to carry a book with you!

Squeezing in a chapter or two while you wait for a friend or colleague is a great way to sneak a little extra reading into your day. It's also a perfect way to relax and become accustomed to your surroundings.

Who knows, you may even find yourself arriving ten minutes early!

8. TRY AN AUDIOBOOK OR PODCAST WHILE YOU WORK


If you're busy on your feet all day and can't find the time to sit down and read for pleasure, why not try an audiobook? Or even a podcast?

Have a look at sites such as Audible. They offer a large and varied selection of new and old books read by well-known narrators, celebrities and authors. They even provide a free 30-day trial! Pop in your headphones and carry on working as your favourite stories come to life.

Top Tip: The dishes seem easier to clean when accompanied by a fantastic work of fiction.

9. WHILE YOU EAT


Do you usually eat your lunch in silence? Or while listening to the radio? Why not mix things up. If you alone during your break, fill the space with a quick chapter or two.

Reading is a great way to ease your mind from the stresses of the day. Filling your thoughts with something other than work or home is a quick destress and replenish before diving back into the day. You'll be surprised how relaxing it can be.

10. WHILE YOU EAT


Candles? Bubble bath? Chilled music?

We all love a relaxing bath. Treat yourself to a little self-care and a good book. Bathing might not be a way to introduce reading into your daily routine, but it sure is enjoyable!
